How to Square a Full Rectangle

For larger building layouts, checking only one corner is not enough. Measure both diagonals of the full rectangle. If both diagonals are equal, the rectangle is square. This method is commonly used for foundations, slabs, rooms, sheds, steel structures, fencing and civil layout work.

Worked Example

A 9 m by 6 m slab should have both diagonals measuring approximately 10.82 m. If one diagonal is longer than the other, the layout is out of square and the corner positions must be adjusted.

The fundamental rule dictates that any triangle with sides in the ratio of 3:4:5 will inherently have a perfect right angle (90°) opposite its longest side (the diagonal). This calculator scales that ratio up or down based on the measurement you input, allowing you to use the largest possible dimensions for your specific site footprint. Using larger dimensions minimizes human measurement error.

How to Use the 3-4-5 Method on Site

Establish the Corner

Drive a peg or mark the exact point where your 90-degree corner will sit. This serves as your absolute starting origin point.

Set the First Line

Run a string line from the corner peg along your known boundary, property line, or main wall orientation. Measure the calculated Short Side distance along this string line starting strictly from the corner peg, and mark it.

Set the Second Line

Run a second string line roughly 90 degrees away from the first line. Measure the calculated Long Side distance along this second line (again, starting from the corner peg) and mark it.

Check the Diagonal

Measure the straight distance directly between the two marks you just made. This measurement is your Diagonal check.

Adjust to Square

If the diagonal measurement is too long, the angle is wider than 90°. If it's too short, the angle is less than 90°. Move the second string line left or right (pivoting from the corner peg) until the diagonal measurement exactly matches the calculator's result. Once it matches, secure the line.

Worked Example

You are laying out a large concrete shed slab. You want to use a 4-meter string line along your longest edge to maximize accuracy when checking for square.

Target Diagonal:5.000 m

Therefore, if you measure exactly 5 meters diagonally between the 3m mark on the short string and the 4m mark on the long string, your corner is perfectly square.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Sagging Tape Measure

Over long distances, a heavy tape measure will sag in the middle, creating an arc that gives a false (longer) reading. Ensure the tape is pulled completely tight, flat, and level when measuring the diagonal.

Wrong Starting Points

Always measure starting from the exact geometric intersection point of the two string lines (the corner peg), not from the outer edge of a profile board or a nearby stake.

Not Checking Full Diagonals

When laying out an enclosed rectangle, setting one 90° corner is not enough. You must measure the full diagonal distance corner-to-corner across the entire shape. If both full diagonals match, the shape is square.
