A vehicle running cost calculator is a financial tool that helps you estimate the true cost of owning and operating a car, bakkie, or truck. It goes beyond just the monthly finance installment to include fuel, insurance, maintenance, tyres, and licensing fees, giving you a complete picture of your vehicle expenses.

How to use this calculator

This calculator features four distinct modes to help you analyze your vehicle costs from different angles:

  • Monthly Running Cost: Enter all your monthly expenses and estimated kilometres to see your total monthly and annual vehicle budget.
  • Trip Fuel Cost: Quickly calculate how much fuel will cost for a specific journey, including return trips and tolls.
  • Cost Per Kilometre: Breaks down your total costs into a per-kilometre rate, useful for comparing vehicles or understanding depreciation.

Calculating your fuel consumption

Many users do not know their exact fuel consumption. If you know how many litres you filled and how many kilometres you drove, the calculator can calculate L/100km and km/L for you. Simply select "Calculate from Litres & Kilometres" in the Fuel Calculation Method dropdown.

Fuel cost vs total running cost

Many drivers mistakenly believe that fuel is their biggest vehicle expense. While fuel is the most frequent out-of-pocket cost, fixed costs like finance installments, insurance, and depreciation (often reflected in the finance cost) usually make up the majority of a vehicle's total running cost. Understanding this balance is crucial for accurate budgeting.

Example Vehicle Running Cost Calculation:

Fuel price: N$22.50 / Litre
Litres filled: 62 L
Kilometres travelled: 580 km
Monthly kilometres: 1,500 km

Fuel Calculations:
Fuel consumption = (62 / 580) × 100 = 10.69 L/100km
Fuel economy = 580 / 62 = 9.35 km/L
Fuel cost for recorded distance = 62 × N$22.50 = N$1,395.00
Fuel cost per km = N$1,395.00 / 580 = N$2.41/km

Monthly Projections:
Projected monthly fuel litres = 1500 × 10.69 / 100 = 160.35 L
Projected monthly fuel cost = 160.35 × N$22.50 = N$3,607.88

Total Monthly Cost:
Add Finance (N$8,500) + Insurance (N$1,200) + Maintenance (N$800) + Tyres (N$600) + Licence (N$150)

How to calculate cost per kilometre

Cost per kilometre (CPK) is calculated by dividing your total vehicle costs over a specific period by the total distance driven in that same period. It is usually split into fixed costs (finance, insurance, licence) which don't change based on how much you drive, and variable costs (fuel, maintenance, tyres) which increase the more you drive.

Why finance installment is not the full vehicle cost

When buying a car, salespeople often focus entirely on the monthly finance installment. However, as our calculator shows, the installment is often only 50% to 60% of the total cost of ownership. If you can only just afford the finance installment, you cannot afford the car once fuel, insurance, and maintenance are added.

Why tyres, insurance and maintenance matter

These are often considered "hidden" costs because they aren't paid every month. A set of four new tyres can cost thousands, and a major service can be equally expensive. By allocating a monthly allowance for these items in our calculator, you can build a sinking fund so you aren't caught off guard when these bills arrive.

Business and work travel cost estimates

If you use your personal vehicle for work, your employer may pay you a reimbursement rate per kilometre. Our Business Travel mode helps you determine if that reimbursement rate actually covers the true cost of operating your vehicle, or if you are subsidizing your employer's travel costs out of your own pocket.

Common vehicle cost calculation mistakes

  • Ignoring tyre wear: Tyres wear out gradually. Not budgeting for them monthly means a massive unexpected bill later.
  • Confusing L/100km and km/L: 10 L/100km is the same as 10 km/L, but 8 L/100km is 12.5 km/L. Ensure you select the correct unit.
  • Underestimating maintenance: Even if a car has a service plan, wear-and-tear items like brake pads and wiper blades are often excluded.
  • Forgetting annual licence fees: While small compared to finance, vehicle registration fees must be paid annually.
