  • MPG to L/100km: The conversion formula is L/100 km = 235.214583 ÷ mpg (US). To convert back, use mpg (US) = 235.214583 ÷ L/100 km. Because they are inversely related, a higher MPG means a lower L/100km.
  • km/L to L/100km: The conversion formula is L/100km = 100 ÷ km/L. To convert back, use km/L = 100 ÷ L/100km.

Let's convert a standard US vehicle efficiency rating of 25 MPG into the metric L/100km format to accurately compare its running costs globally.

Step 1: Identify the starting value and constant

We are starting with 25 MPG. For US mpg, the conversion constant used here is 235.214583.

Step 2: Apply the inverse conversion

Divide the constant by the MPG rating.

235.214583 ÷ 25 = 9.40856 L/100km
