Step 1: Identify the starting value

We are starting with 100 watts of continuous power.

Step 2: Apply the conversion formula

We know that 1 mechanical horsepower equals 745.7 watts. To find the horsepower, divide the wattage by 745.7.

100 W ÷ 745.7 = 0.1341 hp

Therefore, a 100-watt motor generates approximately 0.134 horsepower of mechanical effort.

Common Power Conversion Mistakes

Confusing Power with Energy

Power (kW) is the instantaneous rate of draw. Energy (kWh) is the accumulation over time. You cannot calculate utility bills with just power ratings; you must include time.

Confusing Watts with Watt-hours

Attempting to size a battery bank using Watts instead of Watt-hours. Batteries store energy, not power. Solar panels generate power (Watts), batteries hold the energy (Watt-hours).

Mixing Metric and Mechanical Horsepower

Metric horsepower (PS) is 735.5W, while Mechanical horsepower is 745.7W. Interchanging them when calculating capacities for large industrial setups can result in slight, but critical, mismatches.

Forgetting the Kilowatt Conversion

Dividing Watts directly by horsepower without accounting for the 'kilo' prefix. E.g., converting 10 kW to hp requires dividing 10,000 W by 745.7, not dividing 10 by 745.7.

Decimal Place Errors

Misplacing decimals when jumping between kW and MW. 1 Megawatt (MW) is 1,000 Kilowatts (kW). Mistakes here scale errors by a factor of 1,000.
